Gentlemen,

With reference to your letter of the

(a) 29th May

28th May on the subject of piracy protection

in China, I am commanded by My Lords

Commissioners of the Admiralty to inform you

that although the suggestion was made at the

meeting on the 24th March last that an active

service officer should be seconded to command

the guards, They pointed out in Admiralty

letter M.01046/30 of the 26th idem that this

matter would require consideration by the War

Office. After consultation with the Hong Kong

Government, the War Office has decided that the

work is not suitable for an officer on the

active list.

As the guards are to be entirely

under the control of the Inspector General of

Police at Hong Kong and a white non-Commissioned
